1 Community Exhibition
Finished works become part of a warm and approachable exhibition within the community.
The exhibition is intentionally designed to feel:
-
beautiful
-
touchable
-
welcoming
-
human
rather than distant or intimidating
The exhibition also creates strong visual and cultural value for the community itself.
2 Messages & Interaction
Visitors, residents, staff, and family members are invited to leave messages and responses near the artworks.
This gentle interaction system lowers communication barriers and creates softer entry points into conversation.
Over time, the growing exhibition and message system gently reactivate quiet social connections already present within the community.

Rather than forcing connection, the project softly reactivates existing relationships already present within the community.
4
CONNECT
Gently invites older adults back into the role of:
-
giver
-
creator
-
emotional contributor
This continuation helps residents:
-
confidence
-
creative identity
-
emotional openness
-
social connection

include photos or handwritten messages
-
share memories connected to the making process

-
a conversation starter
-
an emotional gesture
-
a memory container
-
a meaningful connection point
rather than only
receiver of care.
2 Everyday Use
Residents may also choose to:
-
display the work at home
-
use it during tea or daily routines
-
continue sharing the story behind it
The artwork continues living inside everyday life.
Even silent display can continue social interaction.
A coaster placed on a table may quietly communicate:
“I made this.”

Preparing for the Experience
Space Preparation
To help the experience run smoothly, communities are simply encouraged to prepare:
-
Tables and chairs for participants
-
A calm indoor common area
-
Basic staff presence for general supervision if the space is publicly open
-
Optional nearby display space for finished works or community exhibition

Craft Bay provides:
-
all materials
-
facilitation
-
setup and cleanup
-
professional finishing
-
exhibition preparation
No prior art experience is required for participants.
The guided mosaic-making stage is generally designed for residents and supporting care staff only.
Creative experiences involving family members often naturally lead to collaborative ideas, connected artworks, and relationship-based storytelling between participants.
Because of this, separate intergenerational program structures have been specifically designed to better support these shared creative experiences.
Family members and visitors are warmly encouraged to participate during:
-
exhibition viewing
-
message interaction
-
opening displays
-
community sharing moments
Participation Structure
If possible, communities are warmly encouraged to leave a few gentle messages or comments during the exhibition period.
Even small notes from staff can help lower the social barrier for interaction, making it easier for residents, visitors, and families to begin responding to the artworks and to one another.
Over time, these small exchanges may quietly grow into ongoing moments of recognition, conversation, and community connection.
Community Interaction

Why this structure matters

Reduces:
-
fear
-
creative pressure
-
communication barriers
This project is designed as a gradual emotional and social process.
Increasing:
-
confidence
-
participation
-
visibility
-
connection
As the exhibition grows, the impact extends beyond the direct participants. The artworks and message interactions begin to gently influence the wider community environment itself — creating more conversation, warmth, curiosity, and social interaction throughout the space.
Rather than forcing connection, the project softly reactivates existing relationships already present within the community.
Over time, even a small exhibition can help increase:
-
community vitality
-
emotional openness
-
shared identity
-
everyday human connection
in a natural and comfortable way

About the Designer
Claire X. G. is a Sydney-based Community Art & Experience Designer and the founder of Craft Bay.
She designs public creative structures and collective experiences that invite ordinary people into creativity, expression, public display, and human connection.
Rather than placing personal artistic expression above participants, Claire focuses on designing supportive structures where participants themselves become visible creators, contributors, and storytellers.
Her practice explores how gentle creative participation, exhibition, and everyday interaction can help reconnect people with confidence, memory, identity, and quiet social connection within community spaces.
“The Colour of Mine” is part of this ongoing practice.
